Hey folks,
Gardens 4 Humanity will be getting together at 4:30 pm TODAY, Tuesday, Aug 24 at Southside Community Center (SSCC) 305 S. Plain St. to begin preparing the gardens there and at the St. James AME Zion Church just down the block for the fall and for the upcoming afterschool programs at SSCC. Extra tools such as wheelbarrels would be helpful if anyone could bring one. Gloves will be provided.
This is an opportunity for those looking to be involved in the community to engage in an ongoing project and to meet some of those who have been instumental in garden activism and advocacy in Ithaca over the last few years. The gardens at SSCC were started through a joint effort between Elan Shapiro of Sustainable Tompkins, CCE and Dan Flerladge of LACS in 2008. Beginning in spring 2009, Gardens 4 Humanity began to play a role at the center through multiple avenues. An initial community work party was held to create new garden beds and replant perennials to beatify SSCC entrance way. G4H has been working with the Southside Afterschool and Summer Camp Programs to provide gardening education, healthy snacks and fun exercise. The 5 sections of gardens serve both programs and feature herbs, veggies, fruits and a native butterfly garden.
