David Orr, author of “Earth in Mind” to speak in Ithaca on May 6

From: “Marian Brown”

“Green Arts, Downtown, and Economic Development: Oberlin’s Lessons for Ithaca” will be the title of the May 6 talk being delivered by David Orr at 6:00PM in the Borg Warner room of the Tompkins County Public Library. Co-Sponsored by the Downtown Ithaca Alliance and the Tompkins County Climate Protection Initiative, Orr will share lessons learned from implementing a community-wide downtown environmental design project and how communities such as Ithaca might undertake similar projects.

I will be one of folks catering this fabulous bike ride (www.bikeit.org) and I am looking to borrow an enclosed trailer that I can pull behind my van for the trip.

We are looking forward to feeding these hardworking bike riders and instead of driving two cars, we’re trying to make it all work with one van + trailer.

Please contact me if you can hook me up with a trailer. email and cell are best.

Coppice Work Weekend – Western MA – May 8,9

From: Mark Krawczyk <mudshark2003@yahoo.com>
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2010 20:11:21 -0700 (PDT)
Subject: Coppice Work Weekend – Western MA – May 8,9

Hi All,

We’d like to extend an invitation to a coppice work weekend in western Massachusetts (Chester MA, west of Northampton) May 8 and 9. This event was conceived of during the Coppice Workshop that Dave Jacke and Mark Krawczyk taught last fall. We had a lovely turnout, a great time and decided that it’d be fun to get together and have a weekend that combined learning and work on getting the coppice project here off to a good start.
Mark will be joining us and helping us get us started on Saturday. He’ll do a short over-view lecture on Saturday morning and then we’ll work until lunch. After lunch, we’ll have another lecture on a coppice/craft related topic to be chosen by the attendees and then we’ll work for the rest of the afternoon.

After dinner Mark will present some slides from his recent trip back to Greece, England and Macedonia. He recently returned from Europe, having spent some time researching what others are doing with coppice. He and Dave are working on a coppice book together.

On Sunday we’ll be on our own to continue working on the projects we started. We’ll be planting nursery stock, moving soil amendments to planting sites, etc. This is not a huge project so I assume we’ll have fun and not get too tired.

So what’s the scoop about this weekend?

Cost:
We’re asking that every attendee pay $10-30 towards Mark’s fee.

Meals:
Bring breakfast foods for yourselves and/or to share.
Lunch will be provided although if you have something to add or special dietary needs feel free to contribute.
Dinners will be a potluck type of system like last time.

Dates/Times:
May 8 and 9 (Saturday and Sunday) with folks being welcome to come Friday night if they have a distance to travel and want to set up their camp site and be ready Saturday morning without a long drive.

What to bring:
Work clothes, your favorite bug repellant, any tools you like to use for planting, clearing some brambles, etc. Work gloves. Smiles. Good nature. Willingness to have fun. Potluck dinner contribution and snacks. Camping gear if you’re staying over during the weekend.

What not to bring:
Anything illegal except for black locust seedlings. Any pets. Children (unless you’ve called me about it)

What we will provide:
Some tools, good lunch foods, some snacks, tea, water, bathrooms, kitchen facility, learning opportunity, time for easy connection with others that share sustainability interests.

Who can come:
This is first going out to all the folks who either came to the Coppice Workshop last fall or had showed interest. Anyone wanting a fun time working with others. Anyone interested in coppice. You are all welcome to share this info with others who you think would be a good fit. Anyone can come although there will be a limit of spaces so don’t leave this to last minute if you’re interested.

What should you do if you’re interested:
Contact me immediately so I can gauge the level of interest in this weekend. Because it’s not a whole lot of work we need to do here and because it’s a fair amount of work to put on a weekend, I will cancel the weekend if I don’t have enough interest to make it worthwhile for Mark to invest his time coming down here.

Call me at 413-667-8820

Blessings,
Kathrin Woodlyn Bateman

Open enrollment for Dave Jacke workshop at Cornell

*On May 9, Dilmun Hill’s Growing Mosaics Garden is delightedly offering an advanced workshop with Edible Forest Gardens author and designer Dave Jacke

* Please read our announcement below for more details.

If you are interested in coming, please *RSVP by April 25, 2010.* Feel free to share this with relevant groups at this time.

*Edible Forest Gardens 201
Gardening Like the Forest: Building Effective Polycultures
*Sunday, May 9, 2010
11AM- 4:30PM
Dilmun Hill Student Farm
Cost: $40 prepaid by April 30

Lets get practical: how does one design effective polycultures in forest garden ecosystems? We’ll briefly review basic theory, then solidify that theory with a guild and polyculture game and later evaluate Dilmun Hill’s Growing Mosaics Garden polycultures based on what we learn. We will look for what is working well and suggest how to build better polycultures onsite.

Bring your copies of *Edible Forest Gardens, *Volume 2, clipboards or field notebooks, and one or two of your best references on woody and perennial plants (catalogs count!) to add to our resource library for the day.

*Prerequisites:* Familiarity with Edible Forest Gardens, Volumes 1 and 2 * and/or* attendance at earlier workshops with Dave Jacke. Previous experience with forest garden design is a major plus.

*Is this the right workshop for you?* Since this is a more advanced workshop, please ask yourself these questions to ensure that you’ll be ready to go! We don’t need to know the answers to these, but it will help you make a decision about coming.

- What is a polyculture? Can you describe one?
- What benefits do polycultures potentially accrue to gardeners? What problems might polycultures cause if designed poorly?

*RSVP to dilmunhill@cornell.edu by Thursday, April 25* to reserve your spot.
Attendance is limited to 30 to create the best hands-on opportunity for all.
Checks due by April 30 and can be made out to “Dilmun Hill Student Farm” and mailed to Melissa Madden, 147D Plant Science Building, Cornell University, Ithaca, Ny 14853.
Bring your own lunch, snacks provided.*

fingerlakespermaculture email list has crashed; seeking former subscribers

On April 5th the fingerlakespermaculture listserv crashed and the subscription list was lost.

If you would like to re-subscribe (or sign up as a new subscriber,) visit the revived list at http://groups.google.com/group/fingerlakespermaculture or you can follow the links at http://flxpermaculture.net .

Please forward this message widely to those likely to be former or future subscribers.

FLXpermaculture.Net serves permaculture activists and practitioners in New York’s Finger Lakes Region and elsewhere in the North American northeast and the world.

The list had been hosted since 2005 at the mutualaid.org server. Between 200-300 email accounts were subscribed to the original list. The discussion and announcements from this community were shared by a community that included almost 500 fans on Facebook, about 100 followers on Twitter, and countless others who received forwarded messages or visited the blog.

Since the list “disappeared” there has been no word, nor reply to inquiries, about the status of the server or our list. After over two weeks without word or a functioning list, reviving the list through Google groups is the easiest option.

Partner wanted for new farm

Were looking for a farmer/farm couple with expertise in vegetables, berries, fruit, mushrooms, medicinal herbs and / or livestock to help re-create a farm, preferably using permaculture principles, on this 150-year-old former dairy farm. It’s 200 acres, about 50 acres pasture / meadow, most of the rest forest, in East Meredith, NY (Delaware County, near Delhi / Oneonta).

Theres plenty of water, sun and worms. Buildings include a house and garage; there is no longer a barn. The land is organic (unofficially). Would like to develop a relationship beginning with rent or barter, leading to some kind of cooperative arrangement.

This is a unique opportunity for the right person to establish an operation from scratch. To discuss possibilities, please call Carl Arnold at 718 788 5944 or 607 278 5820, or e-mail resume and letter to carlarnold.

Introducing the Upstate NY Permaculture Network

Last month, the 2010 Upstate NY Permaculture Gathering met in the Gear Factory and traded our ideas, questions, and ourselves. Thanks to the organizing work of the Syracuse community of permaculture practitioners–especially the crew at Alchemical Nursery–folks from Buffalo to Albany and points above, below, and in-between had a day to network and put faces to the growing permaculture movement.

During the Open Space session a crew assembled to plan an internet-
based network for sharing and discussion about permaculture in Upstate NY. The first manifestation of this is found at: http://upstateNYpermaculture.Net

The Upstate NY Permaculture Network is an email list for respectful, open discussion of permaculture and especially for social and ecological issues related to permaculture design in New York State’s northern counties. Messages to the list will be posted on the website and forwarded to other social networking applications.

The Upstate NY Permaculture Network is both an audience and a portal for permaculture news, events, and resources. Teachers, students, farmers, gardeners, organizers and individuals seeking the permaculture community can use this network to connect.

The Upstate NY Permaculture Network is a place to promote classes, ask questions, share designs and to organize face-to-face networking. The Network will fill a niche that allows organizers in the larger Northeastern region and worldwide to find and reach out to our local networks within upstate New York and vice versa.

April Transition events in Rochester-free evening/2 day workshop

Thursday, April 22, 2010 – 5PM – 8:30 PM| at the First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Rd South, Rochester NY.
The Rochester Regional Group of the Sierra Club is pleased to announce its 12th Annual Forum, which will be an interactive event, Transitioning to Sustainable Communities. This is Rochester’s FREE premier environmental event promoting individual and organizational networking. Our speaker, Tina Clarke, has been a consultant with the Sustainability Institute (www.sustainer.org) and Bill McKibben’s 350.org (www.350.org) and is a certified Transition Towns Trainer (www.transitiontowns.org). She will describe the latest thinking on the “Triple Challenge” of Peak Oil, Climate Change and Economic Instability. She will share inspiring stories, models and methods that communities are using to “transition” to a more resilient future. Following Tina’s presentation, we will form Facilitated Discussion Groups to encourage discussion by all participants, stimulate new ideas, raise questions and explore answers. We hope to spark interest and creative thinking and offer people an opportunity to identify and join an organization working on these issues. The Forum will be on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Rd South, Rochester NY. Find out more at: http://newyork.sierraclub.org/rochester/2010Forum.html . This event is co-sponsored by the MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence.
