DIRT! The Movie
by Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow

It’s under our feet and under our fingernails, but what is it? And how did it get there? Find out how industrial farming, mining and urban development have led us toward cataclysmic droughts, starvation, floods and climate change. Dirt is a part of everything we eat, drink, and breathe… which is why we should stop treating it like, well… dirt.

Maple Weekend OPEN HOUSE 3/20 & 3/21

Local Sugarbush Offers Free Tours and Tastings in Celebration
of New York Stateʼs Maple Weekend, March 20-21, 11 am to 4pm

ENFIELD, NY – The recent wave of warm days and cold nights has kicked off the 2010 maple sugaring season in Tompkins County. Learn about the sugaring process and taste the sweet sap of the Sugar Maple during an open house hosted by Sapsquatch in celebration of New York State’s Maple Weekend.

The open house will be held from 11am – 4pm on March 20 and 21st. Visitors may explore the forest, participate in the collection and boiling of sap, and sample delicious syrup produced from trees on Enfield’s Connecticut Hill. A limited number of pancakes will be available for tasting with syrup, and individuals may make purchases at the event or place orders for pick-up later in the season.

A formal tour, offered both days at 1pm, will introduce guests to the history and process of sugaring, as well as forest ecology and management strategies that help regenerate the woods.

And, of course, no tour would be complete without a discussion of the legend of Sapsquatch, the giant bigfoot creature who is said to roam these lands, collecting sweet sap.

This family-oriented event is sure to delight visitors of all ages. The sugarbush is located at 2247 Mecklenburg Rd in Enfield; carpooling is encouraged as parking is limited. Please wear boots as the forest is muddy this time of year.

Sapsquatch is locally-owned and operated by permaculture designers Steve Gabriel and Josh Dolan. In addition to their six years of combined experience producing syrup, Steve and Josh have designed curriculums to introduce children of all ages to the traditional and modern methods to tap, collect and boil the sweet sap. Classes are offered throughout Ithaca, through schools, nonprofit agencies, museums and community centers. Children with a passion for maple sugaring can also gain hands-on experience at the sugarbush.

During Maple Weekend, more than 100 maple producers across New York host open houses for the public to see how maple syrup and other related products are made.
